Martis can't contain Howard in defeat

By Kevin Roberts / Special to MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- It's hard to describe what the Nationals are going through, a tough stretch that has seen them find just two wins in their past 16 games. Even Saturday night, when they figured out a way to hit Cole Hamels and knocked the Phillies ace around for six runs in six innings, Shairon Martis gave up seven runs in four innings and the Nationals committed three errors in a 9-6 loss.

Gonzalez recalled, inserted in lineup

By Kevin Roberts / Special to MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- Alberto Gonzalez will be in the Nationals' starting lineup at shortstop this weekend, as Cristian Guzman gets some time off to rest a jammed right thumb.

Gonzalez, recalled by the Nationals on Saturday when outfielder Justin Maxwell was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, batted seventh Saturday against the Phillies. Guzman's injury isn't thought to be anything serious -- "He is able," acting general manager Mike Rizzo said -- but the Nats are taking the opportunity to give the .329-hitting shortstop a break.

"He's got a little bit of a sore thumb, so we'll give him a couple days off and see if he heals," Nationals manager Manny Acta said.

Detwiler struggles early in loss to Phils

By Mike Radano / Special to MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- Ross Detwiler strolled into the clubhouse and asked for one moment of time before talking to the assembled media Friday night.

Given an extra moment, Detwiler removed a fortune cookie from its wrapper, broke the cookie open and read the inscription aloud.

"He who never makes mistakes never did anything worthy," the Nationals' rookie lefty read aloud.

That's good advice on a night Detwiler had plenty of mistakes to learn from.

Detwiler, who began his Major League career with a pair of solid starts against the Pirates and Orioles earlier this month, lasted just four innings and allowed five runs in Washington's 5-4 loss to Philadelphia (26-20) at Citizens Bank Park. The loss was the fourth straight for the Nationals (13-34) on this six-game road trip against National League East foes New York and Philadelphia.

Nats unable to hold off Phillies in finale

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- One had the feeling that Ryan Zimmerman's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Nationals a one-lead might not be enough against the Phillies on Sunday afternoon.

Washington's bullpen, which has been the club's Achilles' heel all season, proved to be again as Philadelphia won, 8-6, at Nationals Park.

Bullpen unable to hang on as Nats fall

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- The bullpen continued to give the Nationals problems Friday, as the Phillies broke a 12th-inning tie to defeat Washington, 10-6, at Nationals Park.

The Nationals' relievers pitched a combined 6 1/3 innings and walked eight batters. Right-hander Kip Wells, who pitched the last two frames of the game, posted the least impressive outing of them all.

Zimmerman hitless, but Nats find a way

By Eric Gilmore / Special to MLB.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman's hitting streak ended at 30 games Wednesday afternoon at AT&T Park, but the Nationals started a winning streak with a 6-3 victory over the Giants.

Zimmerman went 0-for-3 and walked twice, one of those intentional. Giants starter Barry Zito kept him off balance with plenty of off-speed pitches and the occasional well-placed fastball. He went 0-for-2 against Zito with two walks, including the intentional walk in the seventh.

Zimmerman's final at-bat of the game came in the ninth against left-handed reliever Pat Misch, who was recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday and made his first appearance Wednesday. On an 0-1 pitch with no outs and runners on first and third, Zimmerman grounded sharply to shortstop Edgar Renteria, who flipped to second for the forceout.

Zimmerman then received a standing ovation from many of the fans at AT&T.

Beimel unable to save Nationals' night

By Jayson Addcox / Special to MLB.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- For the Nationals, Tuesday's loss to the Giants on a walk-off three-run homer by Pablo Sandoval off reliever Joe Beimel was way too familiar.

The bullpen has been the Achilles' heel, losing game after game and struggling to preserve leads. Manager Manny Acta has tried to mix and match, but nothing seems to work. On Tuesday, the Nationals came back from a four-run deficit only to watch Beimel blow the lead in the ninth.

Cabrera unravels as Nationals fall

By Jayson Addcox / Special to MLB.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Nationals didn't get the pitching performance they were hoping for from hard-throwing righty Daniel Cabrera. Cabrera, who was brought in to help shore up the Nats' pitching staff in the offseason, has yet to find his groove.

On Monday night at AT&T Park, Cabrera (0-4) looked like he was on his way to his second quality start of the season, but an error and four consecutive walks in the fifth inning did him in as the Nationals dropped the first of three games, 11-7, against the Giants.

Lannan, solo shots carry Nationals

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

PHOENIX -- The Nationals arguably had their best win of the season on Saturday, defeating the D-backs, 2-1, at Chase Field.

Washington played great defense and almost every reliever manager Manny Acta used in the last three innings of the game was able to get key outs.
