Nationals storm back to beat Astros

By Mark Selig / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- In the clubhouse before Monday's game against the Astros, starting pitcher John Lannan leaned over teammate Scott Olsen's shoulder and compared solutions to a newspaper crossword puzzle.

Hours later on the mound, Lannan didn't have all the answers, as he yielded four runs (three earned) on nine hits, with no strikeouts in six innings. But his teammates helped fill in the blanks, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to give their left-hander his first three-letter word for victory. The Nationals prevailed, 9-4.

Lannan was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the sixth, and at the time, the Nationals trailed, 4-2. They proceeded to send 11 hitters to the plate in the inning, with Ryan Zimmerman drawing a bases-loaded walk on a borderline pitch to begin the scoring. Adam Dunn put the Nats in front to stay with a bases-loaded, two-run single.

"I just got to keep the team in the ballgame; I didn't do a great job of it tonight, but guys did a great job at scoring a lot of runs," Lannan said. "I'm glad it was a team effort tonight and they got me off the hook."
