Detwiler Strong But Nats Silenced By Braves

VIERA, Fla. -- An error by shortstop Ian Desmond proved to be costly as the Nationals were blanked by the Braves, 5-0, at Space Coast Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off left-hander Ross Detwiler. With two outs and Alex Gonzalez on second base, Freddie Freeman hit what looked like a routine grounder to Desmond at short. Desmond grabbed the ball and threw it past first baseman Michael Aubrey for his first error of the spring.

Detwiler ended up having a dominating performance, going three innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit and striking out five hitters. CONTINUE....

VIERA, Fla. -- Nationals left-hander Ross Detwiler arrived at Space Coast Stadium late Saturday morning on crutches. His arrival came four days after having surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip.

Nationals to promote five players

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have decided to promote pitchers Ross Detwiler, Marco Estrada, Logan Kensing and Zack Segovia and shortstop Ian Desmond to the big leagues.

All five players are coming from Triple-A Syracuse and will report to Nationals Park on Tuesday.

The Nationals are also bringing up Syracuse manager Tim Foli to be an all-purpose coach.
