Balanced Offense Backs Gaudin's Stellar Outing

VIERA, Fla. -- Three runs in the first inning helped the Nationals defeat the Mets, 6-5, at Space Coast Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Washington took the lead in the bottom of the first inning off Mets right-hander Mike Pelfrey. With the bases loaded, Adam LaRoche doubled over the head of Kirk Nieuwenhuis in center field to score Nyjer Morgan and Ian Desmond.

Jayson Werth then scored the third run of the game on a groundout by Ivan Rodriguez. Pelfrey, who pitched four innings, would allow one more run before leaving the game. Werth walked with the bases loaded, scoring Jonathan Van Every to make it 4-0. CONTINUE....
