Nats can't back Olsen's solid return

By Jeff Shain / Special to MLB.com

MIAMI -- Scott Olsen's first outing back from the disabled list produced an effort that was good enough to win. Problem is, good friend Ricky Nolasco's effort was equally effective.

Left to a battle of the bullpens, Olsen's outing was the one that went for naught.

Harris gives Nats back-to-back walk-offs

By Mark Selig / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- As a utility man, Willie Harris' job is to do anything to help his team win.

Saturday night, he did just about everything.

Harris made another highlight catch, used his speed to manufacture a run and finally ended a 12-inning game against the Blue Jays with a two-run blast to right field.

Dunn finishes off Nats' win with walk-off

By Mark Selig / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- In the 1989 comedy classic "Major League," fictional Indians manager Lou Brown tells his previously struggling ballclub, "We've won two games in a row. If we win tonight, it's called a winning streak. It has happened before."

The Nationals, seemingly as unfortunate this year as that cinematic club, hadn't had one of those winning streaks since May 7-9.

Stammen steamrolls Yankees for first win

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Nationals right-hander Craig Stammen had to wait five hours and 26 minutes to pitch in Thursday's game against the Yankees because of a rain delay. It was worth the wait, however, for Stammen pitched the best game of his Major League career as Washington blanked New York, 3-0.

Acta speculation surfaces on FOX

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Citing Major League sources, FOXSports.com reported that the Nationals will dismiss Manny Acta as manager and replace him with bench coach Jim Riggleman. However, two team sources said the report is premature, and Riggleman said he has not been told that he would take over as the club's skipper.

"I haven't heard anything about that. I don't know where it would come from." Riggleman said.

Zimmermann effective, bullpen struggles

By Carter Gaddis / Special to MLB.com

ST. PETERSBURG -- Nationals rookie Jordan Zimmermann pitched well against the Tampa Bay Rays for five innings Saturday. The problem for Washington? He lasted only five innings.

In the sixth, the Rays scored seven runs against relievers Jason Bergmann and Jesus Colome, and Tampa Bay cruised from there for an 8-3 victory.

Johnson's error proves costly for Nats

By Carter Gaddis / Special to MLB.com

ST. PETERSBURG -- Even the most demoralizing season can offer a reason or two to hope. Even a struggling team can give its fans a player or two to count on.

For this year's Nationals, Nick Johnson's sure hands at first base and Ron Villone's steady left arm out of the bullpen have been about the nearest they've had to sure things.

Yet, a 4-3 loss Friday against the Rays at Tropicana Field came down to a two-pitch sequence in the eighth inning, a sequence in which Johnson's glove betrayed him and Villone's reliable veneer was dented by Gabe Kapler's go-ahead, pinch-hit home run.

Two pitches. Another loss.

Soggy twin bill goes against Nationals

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- It ended up being a long day for the Nationals as the Giants swept a doubleheader at Nationals Park on Thursday.

Giants right-hander Matt Cain proved to be too much for the Nationals, who ended up losing the second game of the doubleheader, 4-1, in a rain-shortened affair.

Zimmermann a hard-luck loser to history

By Mark Selig / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Despite a postponement Wednesday and a 36-minute rain delay Thursday, the Nationals could not prolong Randy Johnson's chase for career win No. 300 any longer, as the imposing southpaw helped pitch the Giants to a 5-1 win in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader at Nationals Park.

Nationals rained out vs. Johnson, Giants

By Mark Selig / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- After three hours and 41 minutes of waiting, Wednesday's game between the Nationals and Giants, as well as Randy Johnson's first bid for his 300th career win, were postponed due to rain and thunderstorms at Nationals Park.

The game will be made up Thursday at 4:35 p.m. ET as part of a traditional doubleheader.

Willingham, Guzman out of action

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Nationals manager Manny Acta was planning to start left fielder Josh Willingham on Wednesday night against Giants left-hander Randy Johnson and give Adam Dunn a break because he is hitting .239 against lefties and hasn't had a day off this season.

But Willingham couldn't play because of a bad stomach virus. There is no timetable as to when he will return to the lineup. Willingham has been one of the Nationals' best power hitters, slugging eight home runs in his past 24 games.

"Willingham is not doing too good," Acta said. "He has a virus that is affecting him. He is very weak. He is not in very good shape right now."

Shortstop Cristian Guzman also didn't play against Johnson because of a painful right thumb, which has bothered him for more than a week. It has prevented the switch-hitter from swinging from the right side of the plate.
