Home runs haunt Lannan, Nationals

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- On Monday, the Nationals and Phillies played a draining three-hour, 22-minute game that saw Washington blow a four-run lead and lose, 13-11.

Tuesday's game between the two clubs was anticlimactic. Only this time, the Nationals weren't in the game as they lost to the Phillies, 7-1, at Citizens Bank Park.

Nationals left-hander John Lannan had one bad inning and it proved costly. The contest was scoreless until the third. After Shane Victorino singled with one out, Chase Utley drove an 0-2 pitch over the right-field wall for a two-run homer.

Lannan tried to throw the pitch in the dirt, but the pitch stayed up in the zone.

"I told myself to just bury it in the dirt and I made a bad pitch and he made me pay for it," Lannan said.

Lannan was able to get the second out of the inning, but found himself in trouble again. Jayson Werth reached on an error by shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, who was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse after the game. It was Gonzalez's sixth error in 15 games, and manager Manny Acta is baffled as to why Gonzalez is making so many miscues. Gonzalez has a reputation as an above-average fielder.
