Zimmerman, Dunn power Nats through rain

By Faran Fagen / Special to MLB.com

MIAMI -- After a two-hour, 49-minute rain delay, Ryan Zimmerman and the Nationals made their mark -- literally -- at Sun Life Stadium.

Zimmerman hit a three-run homer off Marlins starter Alex Sanabia that struck the electronic Sun Life Stadium sign just below the left-field upper deck to spark the Nationals to a 9-3 win against the Marlins in front of a paid attendance of 18,326 late Monday night. The home run, which actually took out the "m" in the word "stadium" on the sign, came on a 2-1 fastball and scored Alberto Gonzalez and Roger Bernadina in the third inning.

Nats follow Lannan to series win over Cards

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- After pitching five innings and allowing five runs (four earned) against the Cubs on Tuesday, left-hander John Lannan said he wanted to take his pitching to the next level and pitch deep into a game.

Lannan did just that Sunday afternoon as the Nationals defeated the Cardinals, 4-2, at Nationals Park to take three out of four games from St. Louis and improve to 56-75.

Dunn, Nats tee off on Lohse, Cards

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- After scoring two runs against the Cardinals on Friday night, Nationals manager Jim Riggleman decided to tweak the lineup for the second time in three days.

The skipper put Adam Kennedy back in the leadoff spot, made Nyjer Morgan the eighth-place hitter, placed Roger Bernadina third, slotted Ryan Zimmerman as the cleanup hitter and positioned Adam Dunn at the five-hole. It paid off in a big way as the Nationals outslugged the Cardinals, 14-5, on Saturday night at Nationals Park.

The 14 runs are a single-game high since the team moved to D.C. after the 2004 season.

Nats unable to find spark against Cubs

By Jeff Seidel / Special to MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- There weren't many positives for Washington manager Jim Riggleman to reflect upon Monday night. His Nationals managed only three hits, fell behind early and never were in the game as the Cubs rolled to an easy 9-1 victory.

But what really made the normally mild-mannered Riggleman a little upset was how his team played. Washington (53-72) looked flat the entire game, and they didn't show much energy before the crowd of 17,921 at Nationals Park.

And the skipper let his team hear it after the game.

Nats hold on for win after Strasburg injured

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

PHILDELPHIA -- The Nationals defeated the Phillies, 8-1, at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday night, but Washington also lost starter Stephen Strasburg, who left the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a strained flexor tendon in his right forearm.

After throwing a 1-1 pitch to Domonic Brown for a ball with one out in the fifth, Strasburg was grimacing in pain and shaking his arm.

Long ball dooms Marquis against D-backs

By Greg Rosenstein / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Nationals right-hander Jason Marquis signed a two-year, $15 million contract last offseason to improve a starting rotation in need of help.

But after a year full of poor pitching and injury, it appears Marquis is the one searching for answers.

His struggles continued in the Nationals' 9-2 loss to the D-backs on Saturday night. Marquis allowed five runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- in four-plus innings.

Washington is now 50-67 on the season.

Dunn's two three-run shots carry Nats in LA

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

LOS ANGELES -- Call Friday night the Adam Dunn show. He hit two three-run homers and helped the Nationals defeat the Dodgers, 6-3, at Dodger Stadium.

To put it bluntly, Dunn owns Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw. Dunn hit the two homers against the left-hander as the Nationals were leading, 6-0, after three innings. Dunn ended up going 2-for-3 against Kershaw and is 7-for-11 with three homers against the left-hander. The Dodgers elected to intentionally walk Dunn in his final two at-bats.
