Martin effective, but Nats fall to Crew

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

MILWAUKEE -- Right-hander J.D Martin pitched his best game as a member of the Nationals on Thursday afternoon at Miller Park, but it wasn't enough, as the Brewers won the game, 7-3.

Martin pitched better than the box score indicated. He lasted six-plus innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. But shoddy defense did him in.

Kearns delivers walk-off win vs. Padres

By Mark Selig / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- When Austin Kearns stepped up to bat with two outs and two on in the bottom of the 10th inning at Nationals Park on Sunday, it wasn't a foregone conclusion that the contest would extend to an 11th inning, but that circumstance was certainly the most plausible.

Kearns, who was batting in the fourth slot as a defensive replacement in the ninth, went into the at-bat hitting .196. He had not driven in a run all month.

But in came a fastball from Padres reliever Greg Burke, out went a sharp line drive to the right-center field, and home came Nyjer Morgan from second base, giving the Nationals a 3-2 victory and Kearns the biggest hit of his season.

Lannan hurls first career shutout over Mets

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Call John Lannan the stopper. On Tuesday night, he helped the Nationals break their six-game losing streak by pitching a complete-game shutout in a 4-0 victory over the Mets at Nationals Park.

Lannan joins Pedro Astacio (Aug. 15, 2006) and John Patterson (Aug. 4, 2005) as the only Nationals hurlers to hold opponents scoreless in a complete-game win.

Olsen finished for the season

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Left-hander Scott Olsen visited noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday, and learned that he will be out for the rest of the season because of a small tear in his left labrum.

Olsen, who returned to Nationals Park at 9:50 p.m. ET, will have surgery on Thursday morning at the Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Wiemi Douoguih, the team's medical director, will perform the procedure.

Nats strike early but can't hold lead

By Mark Selig / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- At a press conference earlier this week, interim manager Jim Riggleman mentioned that opponents frequently approach him and ask how the Nationals lose so many games, given their personnel.

For the first half of Saturday's 6-5 loss against the Cubs, the Nationals certainly did not resemble a club that entered the game 37 games under .500.

Nationals let one get away

By Mark Selig / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- To the Nationals, Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano was like an eight-foot bass they almost caught while fishing at the lake.

After their work on Friday night, the Nationals discussed Zambrano's greatness and how close they were to catching him early.

But like the many hackneyed fishing stories people come home with, this one ended without triumph. They let him off the hook. And because of that, the Nationals lost, 3-1, despite another solid outing from rookie starter Craig Stammen.
