Vazquez would be interested in pitching for Nats

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Yankees right-hander Javier Vazquez would be interested in playing on an East Coast team next season, including the Nationals, according to a baseball source close to the hurler.

Vazquez is expected to become a free agent after the World Series is over.

Vazquez has made it known over the years that he doesn't want to play for a West Coast team because he doesn't want to be far away from in family, which lives in Puerto Rico.

Harper makes splash in Fall League debut

By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Bryce Harper's professional debut in the Arizona Fall League was one to remember. One day, it could become an old-fashioned tall tale.

He undoubtedly left the fans at Scottsdale Stadium talking about the exploits of baseball's teenage Paul Bunyon.

Harper finished 1-for-4 with a two-run double Wednesday and spent 10 minutes following the 6-3 victory by his Scottsdale Scorpions signing autographs for fans of all ages.

Nats sign Rizzo to five-year extension

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- The Nationals promoted general manager Mike Rizzo to executive vice president of baseball operations and GM and signed him to a five-year contract extension on Tuesday.

The Nationals increased their win total from 59 in 2009 to 69 this past season, and their 10-game improvement tied for the fourth-best in the Major Leagues this season behind the Padres (plus-15), Reds (13) and Rays (12).

"Mike Rizzo is unquestionably one of the best baseball minds in the game," managing principal owner Ted Lerner said in a statement. "He has a unique ability to see player talent for what it is, what it can be, and how it fits into building a team.

Kasten to keep minority stake in Nationals

PHILADELPHIA -- Stan Kasten had his final news conference as president of the Nationals on Wednesday, and he announced that he will keep his minority ownership stake in the team and continue to help out on a variety of projects.

Although Wednesday is technically his last day, Kasten will continue to help the club get a radio deal, assist COO Andy Feffer in putting his staff together and aid in choosing a Spring Training site. The club has not ruled out Arizona as a possible spring destination.

Nats cap season off with extra-innings win

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- On the last day of the 2010 season, the Nationals defeated the Mets, 2-1, in 14 innings on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.

It marked the second year in a row that the Nationals ended their season with an extra-innings victory. Last year, Washington defeated the Braves by the score of -- you guessed it -- 2-1, in 15 innings.

"It was funny because the guys were telling me that it has become kind of a tradition," said reliever Miguel Batista who picked up his second save of the season. "Last year, they went 15 innings against the Braves. My first question was, 'Did you guys win?' They said, 'Yes.' I said, 'I didn't want to stay this long and lose.'"

Lack of timely hitting, bullpen doom Nats

NEW YORK -- Right-hander Tyler Clippard picked up another decision and it was on the negative side as the Nationals lost to the Mets, 7-2, at Citi Field on Saturday afternoon.

The game was tied at 2, when Clippard entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. He was able to get the first two hitters that he faced, but he had problems getting that third out.

Angel Pagan singled to right and Jesus Feliciano walked to put runners on first and second. David Wright followed and hit a three-run homer over the left-field wall to give New York the lead.
