Nationals fall to Phillies in home finale

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals played their last game of the season at Nationals Park on Wednesday night, and they didn't go out on a good note, losing to the Phillies, 7-1.

It was game in which Philadelphia didn't play a lot of its regulars, but that didn't keep the club from showing its power.

Nats edge Phils on Dunn's walk-off blast

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Adam Dunn's solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Nationals over the Phillies, 2-1, at Nationals Park on Tuesday night.

With the game tied at 1 and Phils reliever Jose Contreras on the mound, Dunn hit a 2-0 pitch deep to right field for his 38th homer of the season.

The Nats got off to a good start against right-hander Roy Oswalt without the benefit of a hit. With Nyjer Morgan on second, Ian Desmond hit a ground ball to shortstop Jimmy Rollins. The Phillies had Morgan hung up between second and third. Rollins threw the ball to third baseman Gregg Dobbs, who allowed the ball to go past him for an error and put runners on second and third.

Cast removed, Strasburg set to start rehab

WASHINGTON -- A month after having elbow reconstruction surgery, Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg said he had his cast removed two weeks ago, is close to having his range of motion back and should be rehabbing his right elbow soon.

Strasburg, who is continuing his studies at San Diego State University, said he watches the Nationals on a regular basis and acknowledged that it's sometimes hard to watch them because he is not out there. Strasburg is expected to be back on a Major League mound by the end of next year.

"I wish I was out there with everybody," Strasburg said during a conference call on Tuesday. "I think the hardest part was being back [in California] and waiting for the surgery to happen. Once it was over with, it was sense of relief. I knew everything was fixed and I'm closer to getting back out there."

Nats unable to keep Phils from East title

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- For the third time in four seasons, the Nationals allowed the Phillies to clinch the National League East title. This time, the location was Nationals Park as the Nationals were blanked by the Phillies, 8-0, on Monday night.

Phillies right-hander Roy Halladay pitched a two-hitter and won his 21st game of the season. Wilson Ramos and Adam Dunn were the only Nationals to get hits off Halladay.

Nationals left-hander John Lannan pitched his final game of the season, tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.

Zimmerman likely done for season

By Bailey Stephens / MLB.com

Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is not in the Nationals lineup for tonight's series opener in Philadelphia, missing his fifth consecutive start with a right rib strain. He is likely done for the season, a baseball source told MLB.com.

With the season winding to a close, the Nats aren't in any hurry to get Zimmerman back on the field at the risk of extending his rehab into the offseason.

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals endured one of the toughest games on their final homestand as they were blanked by the Braves, 5-0, at Nationals Park on Saturday afternoon.

Washington right-hander Yunesky Maya's struggles continues since being called up Sept 7. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits against Atlanta.

It was the defense that did Maya in. With runners on first and second and two outs in the third, Brian McCann hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Alberto Gonzalez, who made a nice play stopping the ball. But Gonzalez threw the ball past first baseman Adam Dunn for an error, allowing Derek Lowe to score.

Dunn rips two shots to rout slumping Braves

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

Dunn rips two shots to rout slumping Braves WASHINGTON -- A day after missing a game because of an elbow injury, first baseman Adam Dunn put on a hitting display and helped the Nationals to an 8-3 victory over the Braves at Nationals Park on Friday night.

Dunn hit two home runs, drove in five runs and had fans chanting, "Sign Adam Dunn." The left-handed-hitting slugger is a free agent after the season.

With the game scoreless, Braves right-hander Tim Hudson was on the mound in the second inning when Dunn hit a 1-0 pitch for a solo homer over the center-field fence.

Morse breaks out to lead Nats to series win

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Michael Morse continues to show that he should be an everyday player. He drove in the game-winning run and helped the Nationals defeat the Astros, 7-2, on Thursday.

The Nationals took three out of four games from the Astros, and they improved their record to 65-88.

It was a game in which Washington's big guns, Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman, didn't play because of injuries. However, Morse compensated for their absence by driving in three runs.

Nats' Espinosa ends slump with decisive shot

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa had a feeling he was going to get out of his hitting slump sooner or later, and he did just that on Wednesday night as the Nationals defeated the Astros, 4-3, at Nationals Park.

On Tuesday, Espinosa called his father, Dan, after the Nats' 8-4 win. The younger Espinosa felt he was swinging the bat a lot better even though he had gone 0-for-4 in the game. He was proven right. Espinosa broke out of a 5-for-50 slump in a big way on Wednesday, going 2-for-4, including a triple and a decisive two-run homer.

"It was a week and a half that I felt comfortable out there," Espinosa said. "I told my dad, "I know I'm right there, I can feel it," Espinosa said.

Pudge turns Nats' fortunes with one swing

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals scored seven eighth-inning runs, all with two outs, to defeat the Astros, 8-4, at Nationals Park on Tuesday night.

Washington was down, 3-1, before rallying against reliever Felipe Paulino in the bottom of the eighth inning. With a runner on first, Ivan Rodriguez tied the score at 3 when he turned on an 0-2 curveball and hit a two-run homer that hit the left-field foul pole.

It helped that Rodriguez was familiar with the right-hander. The two played together when Rodriguez was with the Astros last year.

Three-error inning costs Nats in opener

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Struggles on the hill and in the field helped the Nationals lose to the Astros, 8-2, in front of 10,999 fans at Nationals Park on Monday night.

Like the previous three games, the Nationals had an early lead. In the first inning, Adam Dunn drove in two runs off Houston starter Bud Norris with a double down the right-field line.

But Livan Hernandez, who retired the first six hitters he faced, couldn't hold the lead. In the fifth inning, the Nationals committed three errors as the Astros scored seven runs.

Zimmermann hit hard as Nats come up short

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann continues to have problems on the mound as the Nationals lost to the Phillies, 5-2, at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday night.

It was a game in which the Nationals had opportunities to get Zimmermann at least a no-decision, but they left nine men on base. Wilson Ramos came to the plate twice with the bases loaded, and both times he left all the runners stranded.

Marquis can't escape first in loss to Phils

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

PHILDELPHIA -- Right-hander Jason Marquis had an outing to forget on Friday night. He couldn't get out of the first inning as the Nationals lost to the Phillies, 9-1, at Citizens Bank Park.

Marquis' outing was so bad that it brought back memories of his start on April 18 against the Brewers in which he allowed seven runs without retiring a batter in the first inning. That would be his last game before having right elbow surgery to remove bone chips.

At least Marquis was healthy this time and was able to get an out to start the bottom of the first against the Phillies, but the next eight hitters he faced reached base and six of them scored. Raul Ibanez had the biggest blow with a two-run single.

Morgan's suspension cut to eight games

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Nationals center fielder Nyjer Morgan will begin an eight-game suspension beginning Friday, and has been fined $15,000 by the league office. Morgan is expected to return to action on Sept. 25 against the Braves at Nationals Park.

Morgan will remain with the team in Philadelphia. He will practice with the Nationals, but will watch the games in the stands. Morgan will miss the three-game series against the Phillies, four games against the Astros and one against the Braves in Nationals Park.

"I will be with the team and roll on. I will show support," Morgan said. "I will take batting practice and then watch the game."

Maxwell's slam makes winner of Lannan

By Guy Curtright / Special to MLB.com

ATLANTA -- Be extra careful pitching to the Nationals' otherwise light-hitting Justin Maxwell with the bases loaded. Braves rookie Mike Minor learned that lesson the hard way on Wednesday at Turner Field.

Maxwell, batting for just the fourth time in his brief career with the bases loaded, hit his third grand slam to stake John Lannan to a second-inning lead that the Nationals made stand.

Livan goes deep, shuts down Braves

By Guy Curtwright / Special to MLB.com

ATLANTA -- Adam Dunn has hit a lot of long home runs. But it would be hard to top the mammoth blast the Nationals slugger hit off the Braves' Jair Jurrjens on Tuesday night.

Connecting with a 1-1 fastball that was belt high in the middle of the plate, Dunn smashed a second-inning drive that cleared the pavilion seats and landed on the plaza area to the right of dead center field.

Dunn's 35th homer was estimated at 455 feet, which would make it the sixth longest at Turner Field and just 16 feet short of the record blast by the Cubs' Sammy Sosa in 2001.

Nationals shut out by Lowe, Braves

By Guy Curtwright / Special to MLB.com

ATLANTA -- Although the Nationals are stuck in last place, how they play the last three weeks could determine who wins the National League East. Of the final 19 games, 12 are against the Phillies and Braves.

"I wish we were the ones competing for the playoffs, but since we're not, at least we get in that atmosphere," manager Jim Riggleman said before the start of a three-game series against Braves. "I think it's good for our young players to be in these situations, and we're going to take the games very seriously."

But to impact the pennant race, the Nationals need to get out of their funk and fast. On Monday night, they didn't look much like the team that had split its previous 12 games against the Braves and beaten Derek Lowe three times.

Nats have team meeting after falling to Fish

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- After watching his team lose to the Marlins, 6-5, at Nationals Park on Sunday afternoon, manager Jim Riggleman held a team meeting with his players, because he felt they didn't give it their best effort for nine innings.

Instead of Riggleman doing the talking, he had his coaching staff express the feelings of the manager. The meeting lasted 30 minutes.

Marquis got off to a great start, throwing a no-hitter after four innings, but the Marlins were able to get to him in the fifth.
