Seasoned hurlers lead Nats' 2009 class

It might have slipped past most folks' radars that the Washington Nationals signed 14 of their first 15 Draft picks this summer, and continued to directly address their most pressing need for big league pitching by taking college hurlers with seven picks in the first 10 rounds.

In fact, it might have slipped past most folks' radars that the Nationals even drafted more than two players in 2009, given the avid and well-deserved press that their top two picks got.

Lannan one of many Nats providing hope

WASHINGTON -- Since they arrived in the nation's capital in 2005, the Nationals have always given back in the D.C. metro area, and '09 was no different.

For example, they visited wounded soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, hosted numerous baseball clinics at Nationals Park and donated almost 100,000 tickets to various groups.

Left-hander John Lannan received the most recognition when it came to giving back in Washington. He was the Nats' candidate for the Roberto Clemente Award this season, which recognizes the player who combines giving back to the community with outstanding on-field skills.

Morgan's hand returning to full strength

WASHINGTON -- Nationals center fielder Nyjer Morgan has a reason to be in great spirits before the Thanksgiving holiday. The left hand he broke last August is 100 percent. So much so that he took 30 swings off a tee on Wednesday.

Morgan, 29, acknowledged that he went overboard taking that many cuts, but he was eager to find how healthy the hand was.

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have retained hitting coach Rick Eckstein, pitching coach Steve McCatty and third-base coach Pat Listach.

The club also named John McLaren the bench coach, replacing Pat Corrales; Jim Lett as bullpen coach, replacing Randy Knorr; and Dan Radison the first-base coach, replacing Marquis Grissom.

Nats to name Foli quality control coach

WASHINGTON -- Tim Foli is expected to be a quality control coach with the Nationals, according to manager Jim Riggleman.

Foli will be involved in batting practice before games and be an advisor to Riggleman and general manager Mike Rizzo. Foli, who is considered one of the best teachers in the organization, will also help develop players in the Minor Leagues.

Nats take precaution with Strasburg

WASHINGTON -- Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg has been scratched from Saturday's start in the Arizona Fall League championship game because of a twisted left knee, suffered during a Phoenix Desert Dogs workout on Thursday afternoon.

The injury is not considered serious. An MRI showed inflammation in the knee.

Olsen's shoulder feels 100 percent

Nationals left-hander Scott Olsen is arbitration eligible and it's not known if he will remain with the club.

Olsen is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he pitched 11 games for Washington. A small tear in his left labrum is the reason his season was cut short.

When reached by phone recently, Olsen said he is not sure what the Nationals are thinking these days, but he made it known that his shoulder is 100 percent.

Grissom will not return as Nats coach

WASHINGTON -- Former Major League outfielder Marquis Grissom will not be back as the Nationals' first-base coach, MLB.com learned on Saturday.

No reason was given for Grissom's departure, and Grissom and general manager Mike Rizzo were not available for comment. A baseball source said that Grissom has been offered a job in the organization.

Strasburg shines in return from neck injury

PHOENIX -- Stephen Strasburg came back from having pain in his neck to being a pain in the neck, to the Peoria Saguaros.

Making his first Arizona Fall League start in 12 days on Saturday, Strasburg hurled one-hit shutout ball through 3 2/3 innings to earn his league-high fourth win in the Phoenix Desert Dogs' 1-0 victory over Peoria at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Nationals appoint Riggleman manager

WASHINGTON -- As a kid growing up in the 1950s and '60s, Jim Riggleman was a Senators fan and often went to Griffith Stadium to watch them play.

On Thursday afternoon, Riggleman's dreams came true when the Nationals named him their permanent manager with a two-year deal, with an option for a third year. The monetary amount of the contract was not disclosed.

The news comes five months after Riggleman was named the interim skipper, replacing Manny Acta.

The day after the end of the World Series marks the unofficial beginning of the offseason and the official start of free agency, which means it's decision time for Major League clubs. For the Nationals, it also means one very important thing: a little contractual freedom.

Beginning Thursday, players with expiring contracts and at least six years of Major League service time have a 15-day window to file for free agency. During that time, the team that player ended the 2009 season with has exclusive negotiation rights. After that, they are free to sign with any team.
