Bruney eager for 'challenge' with Nats

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

In acquiring right-hander Brian Bruney from the Yankees on Dec. 7, the Nationals picked up a power arm who could pitch in the late innings. Bruney will battle right-hander Matt Capps for the closer role.

Bruney, who was selected by Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft when Rizzo was with the D-backs, was 5-0 with a 3.92 ERA in 44 appearances as the Yanks' setup man in '09.

However, Bruney, 27, was left off the Yankees' playoff roster in the first two rounds before being activated for the World Series against the Phillies.

MLB.com caught up with Bruney recently to talk about his future with the Nationals, his relationship with Rizzo and his last year with the Yankees.

Strasburg takes loss in second AFL start

By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com

PEORIA, Ariz. -- It was a learning experience for the Nationals' Stephen Strasburg on Thursday at Peoria Stadium. In his second Arizona Fall League start for the Phoenix Desert Dogs, the No. 1 pick in the nation plummeted to earth.

Strasburg allowed eight earned runs and seven hits, including three homers (one a grand slam), in a 9-6 loss to the Peoria Javelinas. It was his first look at that kind of disaster. Take note that he gave up only 16 earned runs in 15 college starts this season for San Diego State, for which he was 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA during his junior year.

In his two AFL starts, he's 1-1 with a 10.50 ERA. Welcome to professional baseball.

Q&A with principal owner Lerner

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

Nationals principal owner Mark Lerner will be the first to tell you the Lerner Group was not happy that the team finished with the worst record in baseball for the second consecutive season. But he will also point out there was real progress made during the second half. Under interim manager Jim Riggleman, the Nationals played better baseball, going 33-42 and winning their last seven games of the 2009 season.

MLB.com reporter Bill Ladson recently caught up with Lerner, who answered questions by email about the Nationals and other topics surrounding the team.

Strasburg set for Arizona Fall League debut

By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com

PHOENIX -- If it was Friday night at San Diego State this past college season, it was Stephen Strasburg night at Tony Gwynn Stadium -- standing-room-only crowds amid great anticipation and excitement.

Thus it may be no coincidence that the first Arizona Fall League (AFL) start for Major League Baseball's No. 1 pick -- by the Nationals -- in this past June's First-Year Player Draft will be on Friday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

It's still Stephen Strasburg Friday nights.

Strasburg sees first game action as pro

By David Villavicencio

VIERA, Fla. -- Special. Phenomenal. A star in the making.

Nearly two months after receiving the largest signing bonus for a drafted player and four months since he last pitched in a game, Stephen Strasburg was everything the Nationals expected in his professional debut Monday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium.

The right-hander held the Detroit Tigers' instructional league team to one run on three hits over two innings while striking out two batters. Strasburg, who entered the game with a 40-pitch limit, was happy to be pitching in a game for the first time since his final collegiate start on May 29.

Late burst doesn't benefit Nationals

By Bill Ladson

WASHINGTON -- Before the 2009 season started, the Nationals believed they would be better than last year's team, which lost 102 games. Acquiring Adam Dunn, Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham was the impetus for that thinking.

Washington also thought a healthy Ryan Zimmerman would make a world of difference, offensively and defensively.

But the season turned out to be the worst in team history. The Nationals lost 103 games, and will get the first pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft for the second consecutive season.

A struggling pitching staff and defensive lapses were the main reasons for the team's woes.

Nationals walk off, sweep Mets

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- About 30 minutes before Wednesday's game against the Mets at Nationals Park, general manager Mike Rizzo thanked the fans for supporting the Nationals and acknowledged that it has been a trying season for the team, but he also said this:

"We are looking for brighter and better days in 2010."

The Nationals took a step in the right direction, defeating the Mets, 7-4, on Fan Appreciation Day in thrilling fashion. Down 4-2, Washington made its comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
